Conference with Dr. Pierre Louge

Pierre SZALAY, President of the MSDA and M. K. SERVANSING, PMSM, Ag. Commanding Officer, SMF had the pleasure of inviting the diving instructors of the MSDA and the Police in addition to medical practitioners specializing in diving medicine to a conference:

An overview of diving accidents in 2014
The two conference sessions were led by Dr Pierre Louge, consultant in the hyperbaric medicine and diving expertise department at the Sainte Anne military training hospital in Toulon, France.


The first session took place on 25 April 2014 from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Mauritius Underwater Group centre (MUG) in Phoenix:
1. Issues surrounding spinal cord decompression illness.
2. Decompression accidents affecting the inner ear – presentation of 115 cases.
3. Immersion pulmonary oedema (IPE).
4. Prevention of diving accidents – the concept of “preconditioning”.
The second session took place on Tuesday 29 April from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Special Mobile Force (SMF) centre in Vacoas:
1. Scuba diving-related risks and accidents: accident statistics, prevention of medical risks (spinal cord decompression illness, immersion pulmonary oedema and cardiac decompensation risk).
2. Embolisms and decompression illness affecting freedivers.
3. Required procedure in the event of a diving accident on site.
4. Diving with mixes other than standard air. Military experience. What is the current situation with regard to medical treatment of decompression illness following diving on mixes other than standard air?

In addition, on this occasion Captain Pascal Pulcherie of the GIPM (Groupe d’intervention de la Police Mauricienne) provided a presentation on the work of Mauritius Police divers and Dr Nagalingum provided an update on the activity of the Candos Hyperbaric Centre.
